Dr. Salom has an MD from the State University of NY at Buffalo, a MSc (Medicine) with concentration in Nutrition from the University of Minnesota and a MSc in health care policy and finance from NYU. He has been certified in Internal and Geriatric Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology. After a fellowship in gastroenterology he was a director of clinical research at Ayerst Labs for three years, in clinical practice from 1985 to 2005 with Queens-Long Island Medical Group, a 300-physician multi-specialty group, from 2005-2006 Medical Director, Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center, a maximum-security hospital of the NY State Office of Mental Health, then was Medical Director, GHI HMO Select, Inc., responsible for medical quality and utilization for about 100,000 people. He has for three years been an administrator at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Newark, NJ.
Dr. Salom is Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine and Geriatrics, Mount Sinai Medical School. He has been an investigator in many clinical studies, including the landmark ‘ALLHAT’ blood pressure study of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the NY State Board of Professional Medical Conduct and the American Arbitration Association. He conducts hearings as an auxiliary member of the NYS Board of Medicine and continues active service as a reserve officer – Commander - in the US Public Health Service (PHS). In 2005 he was appointed State Director for the SGAUS Military Emergency Specialist Academy for NY and in 2008 was appointed its Regional Director – Northeast.
In 2010, the Secretary of Defense appointed Dr. Salom to the Uniform Formulary Beneficiary Advisory Panel – overseeing pharmacy benefits for the 9.1-million member TRICARE health care system for uniformed services members, dependents and retirees. He has received awards from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, American College of Physicians, American Society of Internal Medicine, Phi Lambda Kappa Medical Fraternity and National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, the State Guard Association of the US (SGAUS) and distinguished alumni awards from NYU and Excelsior College.
Dr. Salom is currently also Chief Medical Officer / Clinical Director for the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Public Health Service, Indian health Service.
